Scotts Viridian St Augustine Grass New In 2025
05 Jan 2025
Scotts Viridian St Augustine Grass is here!
This year Scotts is releasing a new variety of St Augustine grass called Viridian. Viridian St Augustine grass will incorporate all of the same technology we’ve come to appreciate in their original release, ProVista.
Scotts ProVista St Augustine grass (Viridian too) attributes include:
- Glyphosate tolerance
- Glyphosate is a non-selective herbicide which basically means it kills anything green.
- Scotts ProVista (and now Viridian) are bred to be glyphosate tolerant which means you can use it as weed control in your ProVista (Viridian) lawn.
- In Florida this means you can now control invasions of wild/common bermuda grass, torpedograss, crabgrass, tropical signalgrass and pretty much anything else. This is the first St Augustine grass that allows you to keep a clean stand of turf.
- Slower Grower
- ProVista (Viridian) grows about half as fast as other St Augustine varieties like Floratam or Palmetto.
- This is great in the rainy season when the lawn is wet most of the time and you can’t mow - at least you know now that it won’t get away from you! No more overgrown mowing.
- If you like to mow the lawn like I do, you can still mow every single week. The difference is instead of removing 3-4” of top growth in the midst of the season, you’ll just be trimming off an inch or so. Same mow, same fun, just less stress on the turf due to staying well within the famous “⅓ rule of mowing.”
- This also allows you to mow ProVista (Viridian) lower if you want to. You can easily manage them at 2.5” and keep a super tight turfstand that again, will not get away from you.
- Hammer it with nitrogen to drive it deep deep green and it won’t get away from you. There is no “surge growth” with ProVista and Viridian St Augustine.
- Deeper Darker Green Color
- Due to the slower growth nature, the grass blades pack the chlorophyll together much tighter which gives ProVista and Viridian a much darker color. In my opinion, Viridian is a little darker green than ProVista.
- Viridian Only - Cold Tolerance
- With the newest release of Viridian, you now have the added benefit of cold tolerance. That’s what Scotts has done with this one is added that additional cold tolerance in by grabbing some attributes directly from the famous Raleigh St Augustine variety.
- I’ve also been told that Viridian offers some better shade tolerance as a result.
Find out if Viridian St Augustine grass is available in your area by following this link directly to the Scotts ProVista/Viridian website contact page. You can also call your local sod farm and ask them if they are planning to grow it. Tell them that The Lawn Care Nut has it and you’re interested in getting some for your lawn too!
